VisitFlanders Highlights Its Masterpieces

The Flemish masters and cycling tours are the two main themes of VisitFlanders this year.

During 2019, the focus will be on Pieter Bruegel the Elder, who is largely responsible for the creation of Flanders’ national psyche and collective consciousness as hard working yet bon vivant.

Flanders is awash with beautiful landscapes, picturesque villages and the ‘joie de vivre’ that Bruegel painted so beautifully.

Flanders will celebrate the 450th anniversary of his death next year with an impressive series of exhibitions and events to showcase what an exceptional artist he was.

In 2020, VisitFlanders will be promoting Jan Van Eyck in a special year which sees the return of the Ghent Altarpiece to its home in St. Bavo’s cathedral in Ghent.

A major figure in the painting revolution of the 15th century, his precise observation and mastery of oils took painting to new heights.

His main creation, the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb, is considered to be one of the world’s greatest art treasures and has been the victim of 13 crimes and seven thefts since its installation, making it the most stolen artwork in history.

Visitors to the STAM, Ghent’s City Museum can find out more.

Meanwhile, bikes are an integral part of life in Belgium and bike racing is one the most avidly supported sports in Flanders. There are several classic races which are keenly followed and attract a keen international interest.

A new digital trade brochure specifically on recreational cycling in Flanders will be available to operators on our stand.

The tourist board is holding a special event on Monday November 5 dedicated to cycling in Flanders.
