Cape Town positions itself as the ‘Events Capital of Africa’

World Travel Market Africa has thrust Cape Town onto the world stage, presenting the city with an opportunity to actively position itself as the ‘Events Capital of Africa’.

Cape Town hosts a variety of local and international events annually, from concerts and cultural festivals to business conferences and international sports tournaments.

Key annual events include the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the Cape Town Marathon, Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, Design Indaba, the Fringe Festival, Mining Indaba, the Absa Cape Epic (mountain biking), the world-renowned Cape Town International Jazz Festival and World Travel Market Africa – part of Africa Travel Week, the continent’s largest international travel industry event.

Combined, these events contribute hundreds of millions of Rands to the city’s economy. Our success in hosting events of various sizes and types throughout the year, and throughout various parts of the city, has earned Cape Town an enviable reputation as an events destination. Our strategies recognise there are opportunities to build on our firm foundation of success to achieve greater benefits, by enhanced leveraging of existing events through alignment of branding and improved marketing and promotion; development of existing events; and through opportunities to attract new events that match the City’s goals and image.

Events play a pivotal role in generating visitor expenditure and dispersal across the city and are catalysts for new ways of working and thinking about providing outstanding visitor experience in a unique and incredibly beautiful setting. In addition, Cape Town boasts a variety of premier event locations; from the multi-functional Cape Town Stadium to the iconic Cape Town City Hall and Africa’s foremost meetings and conferencing venue, the Cape Town International Convention Centre. More than 2 million people attended events and conferences at key City properties last year.

Properties include the Cape Town Stadium, the Cape Town City Hall, the Good Hope Centre, Athlone Stadium and the Grand Parade. Local and international event organisers are increasingly choosing these venues for cultural events, music shows and conferences.
